Zinnia tenuifolia (Red Spider Zinnia)

Red Spider Zinnia, Zinnia peruviana 'Red Spider'

Zinnia tenuifolia, Red Spider Zinnia, Zinnia peruviana 'Red Spider', Red Zinnia, Red Summer flowers

Zinnia tenuifolia (Red Spider Zinnia) is a compact, upright annual boasting a profusion of single, daisy-like flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), with spidery, and narrow petals. Blooming from summer to fall, the blossoms are borne on thin stems above the foliage of lance-shaped green leaves. Attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators, this neat and bushy zinnia is perfect for the sunny border or patio containers.

  • Grows up to 24-30 in. tall (60-75 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in humus-rich, well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerate all soil types except for wet, poorly aerated soils, which can cause root rot.
  • A great choice for beds and borders, cottage gardens, city gardens, wildlife gardens, pollinator gardens, or containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for gray mold and powdery mildew. Grow this zinnia in an open site to prevent powdery mildew issues.
  • Don’t crowd the plants to keep them disease-free and avoid powdery mildew. Air circulation is important.
  • Deadhead to prolong flowering.
  • Propagate by seed sown in pots in spring or, in warm areas, sown in situ in late spring.
