Cornus 'Venus' (Dogwood)

Venus Dogwood, Cornus × elwinortonii 'Kn30 8', Cornus × elwinortonii Venus

Suitable for small gardens, Cornus 'Venus' (Dogwood) is a vigorous, spreading small deciduous tree with many seasons of interest. In spring, a profusion of huge, creamy-white flowers, or bracts, 6 in. across (15 cm), cover the tree, creating a striking floral show. The blossoms may be followed by pinkish-red, strawberry like fruit later in the season. In summer, its canopy of layered branches, clad with glossy green, oval to egg-shaped leaves, provides shade and beauty. In the fall, it offers spectacular bright color when its foliage turns attractive shades of yellow, red, orange and purple. Conus 'Venus' is a cross between Cornus kousa and Cornus nuttallii. Small, but tough, this dogwood has an excellent tolerance to drought and diseases. Plant this flowering tree as a specimen or in small groupings for a dramatic effect.

  • Grows up to 15-18 ft. tall (450-540 cm) and 18-20 ft. wide (540-600 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade, in organically rich, well-drained soils. Provide consistent moisture during hot summers.
  • Great choice as a specimen near patios or in lawns, in shrub borders, woodland gardens, or naturalized areas.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Easy to grow, easy to care for, deer resistant.
  • This Dogwood naturally forms a well-branched framework and requires little or no pruning.
  • Propagate by grafting or from semi-hardwood cuttings.
