Hebe 'Frozen Flame'
Frozen Flame Hebe, Veronica 'Frozen Flame'
Hebe 'Frozen Flame' is a compact, rounded, evergreen shrub forming a mound of slender, gray-green leaves with irregular creamy-white margins. Both leaf tips and edges turn bright pinkish-purple in cold weather. In summer, small lavender flowers appear on the tips of the branches. However, the main contribution of this evergreen shrub is its brightly colored foliage throughout the year. A great choice as a specimen plant, for containers or the mixed border.
- Typically grows up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm).
- Thrives in full sun or part shade in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Prefers moderately alkaline to neutral soils. Protect from cold, drying winds.
- Very versatile, this plant is perfect for edging, beds, and borders or containers. Well suited to city gardens, coastal gardens, rock gardens, or cottage gardens.
- Rarely affected by pests or diseases, it requires little maintenance. Keep an eye out for aphids and downy mildew.
- Needs little pruning. Prune lightly removing unsightly shoots as required in mid to late spring. This shrub blooms in summer and late fall on the previous or current year's growth.
- Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in late summer or autumn with added bottom heat.
