A particularly attractive curly ivy, Hedera helix ‘Ivalace’ (English Ivy) is a small evergreen climber with broad, dark, shiny, 5-lobed leaves, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with wavy edges, giving the leaves a cupped and lacy appearance. Extremely ornamental, this versatile ivy does well as a houseplant, can be used as a groundcover in small areas, and trained in small topiaries.

  • The American Ivy Society has selected Hedera helix ‘Ivalace’ as the Ivy of the Year for 2011.
  • With a moderate to fast growth rate, this ivy grows up to 3 ft. tall (90 cm) and 4 ft. wide (120 cm).
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. This plant is not fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions. Some drought tolerance, but produces its best foliage color in evenly moist soils. Provide shelter from cold, drying winds.
  • Susceptible to leaf spot, aphids, scale insects and vine weevil.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in summer.
  • Ingestion may cause severe discomfort.
