An attractive woodland sunflower , Helianthus decapetalus (Ten-Petaled Sunflower) is a showy rhizomatous perennial bearing oval to lance shaped, dark green leaves, 7 in. long (17 cm), with sharply serrated edges. Blooming for 4-6 weeks in early summer to late fall, a profusion of yellow flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), are borne atop tall leafless stems. They feature 8-12 yellow rays and a golden yellow center disk. The blossoms are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Birds and small mammals love to eat the seeds directly from the seed heads. Perfect for adding summer and fall color in partly shaded borders and naturalized areas.

  • Typically grows up to 3-5 ft. tall (90-150 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm). Will spread vigorously by self-seeding and creeping rhizomes to form colonies.
  • Performs best in part shade in moist to mesic conditions, and a rich loamy soil.
  • Low maintenance, this is a fine choice for partially shaded cottage gardens, bird or butterfly gardens, wildflower gardens, prairies and meadows or along ponds and streams.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew if the plant is stressed by long periods of drought. This plant is occasionally browsed by rabbits or deer.
  • To create a bushier plant prior to the blooming season, remove a third of the plant’s height in early summer.
  • Propagate by seeds planted in the spring or division in fall or spring.
  • Native to the Eastern and Central United States and Canada, from New Brunswick west to Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ontario, south as far as Georgia and Louisiana.
