Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra 'Burning Hearts', Ox Eye 'Burning Hearts', Rough Ox Eye 'Burning Hearts', Hardy Zinnia 'Burning Hearts', Yellow Flowers

Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra ‘Burning Hearts’ (False Sunflower) is a showy short-lived perennial forming an upright clump of stiff purple stems boasting sunflower-like flowers from midsummer to fall. Each blossom features bright golden-yellow ray petals with vibrant red-orange centers, surrounding a cone-shaped brownish-yellow center disks. They are visited by bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. The stems are clothed with pairs of rough-textured, toothed, dark purple leaves. A valuable addition to the landscape with its profusion of cheerful blossoms over a long season, False Sunflower is an undemanding plant which provides excellent, midsummer color. Hardy and easy to grow, it is a beautiful garden perennial for dry sites.

  • Grows up to 36-48 in. tall (90-120 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. This plant is not fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils, dry soils and clay soils. Light shade is also tolerated, although the plants might tend to flop and hence will require some support. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Excellent choice for the perennial border where the dazzling flowers are welcomed in any color scheme. Perfectly suited to the cottage garden, rock garden, or containers.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to promote new blooms. Cut back after flowering.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids. Deer tend to avoid this plant.
  • Propagate by seed in fall or early spring. Large clumps can be divided, but it is fairly difficult.
  • Heliopsis helianthoides species is native to central and eastern North America.
