Dalmatian Iris 'Argentea Variegata', Silver-Variegated Sweet Iris, Zebra Iris 'Argentea Variegata', Sweet Iris 'Argentea Variegata', Iris pallida 'Albo Variegata'
Native of Dalmatia in Croatia, Iris Pallida 'Argentea Variegata' is a semi-evergreen rhizomatous Bearded Iris noted for its striking foliage and showy, scented purple flowers. The unique variegated foliage consists of sword-like leaves, elegantly striped with silvery-white and gray-green. Long-lasting, it extends its dramatic interest through fall and even winter, if mild enough. Sweetly fragrant, light blue-purple flowers with decorative yellow beards, about 3-5 in. wide (7-12 cm) appear in late spring to early summer atop scapes rising to 34 in. tall (85 cm).
- Graceful and vigorous, this strong performer is easy to grow and low maintenance!
- Most spectacular when planted in large groupings where it develops a bouquet effect and rises up to 34 in. (85 cm) and spreads to 12-18 in. (30-45 cm).
- Performs best in full sun or part shade, in acidic, moist, humus-rich soils. Drought tolerant (established plants tolerate some dry conditions). Prefers a sunny location, but this species is more shade-tolerant than many other species of Iris.
- A welcomed addition to beds, borders, cottage gardens, city gardens or coastal garden, where it will provide excellent color contrast. Great iris for partial shade gardens! Excellent for cutting.
- Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, but ignored by deer and rabbit!
- No serious insect or disease issues but watch for iris borer.
- Cut back after flowering.
- Divide in late summer if required.
- All parts may cause discomfort if ingested. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
