Malus 'Indian Summer' (Crabapple)
Crabapple 'Indian Summer', Crab Apple 'Indian Summer'
A very fine crabapple, Malus 'Indian Summer' is an upright, broad-rounded deciduous tree with a long season of interest. Opening from crimson buds, masses of fragrant, deep rose-red, single flowers appear in mid-spring, just as the foliage is unfolding. Draped in clusters along the branches, they provide a truly spectacular display. The flowers are followed by abundant glossy, bright red fruits, 3/4 in. (2 cm), that mature in fall and persist into winter. Emerging purplish in spring, the foliage of oval leaves turns bronze-green throughout the growing season before turning orange-red in the fall. A beautiful ornamental tree for small gardens with good disease resistance.
- Grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (4-6 m).
- A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
- Perfect as a specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
- Require only minimal pruning in late winter, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
