Malus 'Louisa' (Crabapple)
Crabapple 'Louisa', Crab Apple 'Louisa'
A very fine Crabapple, Malus 'Louisa' is a dense deciduous tree of rounded form with gracefully weeping branches over a long season of interest. Opening from red buds, masses of fragrant, soft pink, single flowers appear in mid-spring, just as the foliage is unfolding. Draped in clusters along the cascading branches, they provide a dramatic display. The flowers are followed by abundant glossy, golden-yellow fruits, 1/2 in. (1.2 cm), adorned with a rose blush, that persist well into winter. The foliage of pointy deep green leaves turns delicate shades of yellow-orange in the fall, before shedding to the ground. An excellent, elegant weeper with good disease resistance. A beautiful ornamental tree for small gardens.
- Grows up to 12-15 ft. tall and wide (360-450 cm).
- A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
- Perfect as a specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
- Require only minimal pruning in late winter, to remove damaged, diseased, or misplaced growth.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
