Malus × robusta 'Red Sentinel' (Crabapple)
Crabapple 'Red Sentinel', Crab Apple 'Red Sentinel'
Attractive and productive, Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel' (Crabapple) is a small deciduous tree with a long season of interest. Opening from dark pink buds, a profusion of fragrant, single, white blossoms appear in late spring, just as the light green foliage is unfolding. They are followed by particularly abundant clusters of cherry-like, glossy, deep red fruits, 1 in. wide (2.5 cm), which persist well into winter. The fruits can be harvested to make delicious crabapple jelly. Any unpicked fruits will remain colorful and decorative through the winter but will gradually turn mushy. When soft enough, flocks of wild birds will feast on them. As an added bonus,'Red Sentinel' doesn't suffer from scab, an issue of many other crabapples.
