Malus × robusta 'Red Sentinel' (Crabapple)

Crabapple 'Red Sentinel', Crab Apple 'Red Sentinel'

Attractive and productive, Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel' (Crabapple) is a small deciduous tree with a long season of interest. Opening from dark pink buds, a profusion of fragrant, single, white blossoms appear in late spring, just as the light green foliage is unfolding. They are followed by particularly abundant clusters of cherry-like, glossy, deep red fruits, 1 in. wide (2.5 cm), which persist well into winter. The fruits can be harvested to make delicious crabapple jelly. Any unpicked fruits will remain colorful and decorative through the winter but will gradually turn mushy. When soft enough, flocks of wild birds will feast on them. As an added bonus,'Red Sentinel' doesn't suffer from scab, an issue of many other crabapples.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up with a dense, spreading, bushy habit to 10 ft. tall and wide (3 m)
  • A full sun or part shade lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens. Perfect for small gardens!
  • Require only minimal pruning in late winter or spring, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth.
  • Propagate by chip budding in late summer. Grafting can be carried out in midwinter
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
