A long-time favorite plant for its remarkable, fragrant flowers and delectable fruits, award-winner Passiflora alata (Winged-stem Passion Flower or Fragrant Gradanilla) is a vigorous evergreen climber. In late summer to early fall, it bears fascinating, pendulous, bowl-shaped flowers, 5 in. across (12 cm), with dark crimson tepals and a ring of purple and white striped coronal filaments. The showy fragrant blossoms are followed by egg-size yellow to orange, edible fruits that can grow to 4-5 in. long (10-12 cm). Fragrant Granadilla is cultivated in Brazil where its fruits are highly prized. The foliage consists of large, three-lobed, ovate, dark green leaves and remains attractive all year around.

Fragrant Gradanilla is a Passion vine native to Brazil and Peru. It is evergreen in frost-free locations and deciduous in colder locations. Can generally tolerate short temperature drops to 32°F (0°C).

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its noteworthy qualities.
  • Blooms in late summer to fall
  • Thrives in full sun or part shade, in sandy or loamy, moist, well-drained soils. Water freely when in growth and sparingly in winter.
  • Easy to grow, this Passion vine can quickly grow up to 10-20 ft. long (3-6 m). Don’t try to train your Passion Flower to be too neat and compact. The branches allowed to hang loose and droop a bit will be the ones most inclined to flower.
  • Excellent choice for trellises, walls, fences, or arbors. Perfect in wall-side borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, and containers. This trouble-free climber clings with tendrils so won’t damage brickwork or fences!
  • Butterflies are extraordinarily fond of Passion Flowers.
  • Propagate by seed sown at 13 to 18 °C in spring or root semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Layering can be carried out in spring or fall
  • This vine blooms on new growth and should be pruned in late winter or early spring. No regular pruning needed. However trimming may be required to keep them to the space available, removing as much from the longer shoots as necessary.
