Phygelius x rectus 'African Queen' (Cape Fuchsia)
Cape Fuchsia 'African Queen', Cape Figwort 'African Queen'
Particularly floriferous, Phygelius x rectus 'African Queen' (Cape Fuchsia) is a lovely perennial plant for the summer garden thanks to its with profuse clusters of fuchsia-like, salmon-orange flowers adorned with a yellow throat. Blooming for months from midsummer to fall, the blossoms hang like decorative earrings atop the upright mound of green, bushy foliage. Native to South Africa, it is highly attractive to hummingbirds!
- Grows 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm) in cooler climates and even grows larger in warmer areas.
- Performs best in full sun (some shade is tolerated), in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils.
- Great candidate for beds, borders, containers.
- Mostly pest or disease free, This perennial plant is evergreen in warm winter climates (USDA Zones 8-9) but it rarely survives in colder winter climates (USDA Zones 6-7). Selecting a protected area and using winter mulch might help in mild Zone 6 winters.
- Deadhead spent flowers to promote new blooms. Cape Fuchsias are suckering plants that will spread if not contained. Remove these running suckers from the plant to keep it from dominating.
