Polypodium californicum (California Polypody)

California Polypody

Polypodium californicum, California Polypody, plants for shade, Evergreen Fern

A popular California native fern, Polypodium californicum (California Polypody) is a semi-evergreen fern with attractive leathery, lance-shaped, rich green fronds. Remaining lush and fresh-looking from fall to spring, California Polypody dies back to the ground in the dry season. In areas that are wet year round it may stay evergreen. It spreads slowly by creeping rhizomes to form a lovely colony. Undemanding, adding charm and personality to gardens, it is often used in moist rock gardens, rocky slopes, and fern grottos. Perfect under the dense shade of native oaks and other trees.

  • Grows up to 18 in. tall (45 cm) and 3 ft. wide (90 cm).
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide variety of soils as long as adequate moisture is present.
  • This plant is a great choice for shady beds and borders, underplanting of roses and shrubs, cottage gardens, rock gardens, rain gardens, or woodland gardens.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Dead or damaged fronds may be removed as necessary.
  • Propagate by spores.
  • Native to California and northwestern Mexico.
