Rose American Pillar

Drought resistant, shade tolerant, Rosa ‘American Pillar’ is a striking rambler rose which explodes with a profusion of carmine-pink single blooms, 2.25 in. wide (5.5 cm), held in huge clusters. A brushing of white at the base of the 5 petals offsets a large eye of golden stamens. These wonderful blossoms resemble the wild rose in size and look and are an unending source of beauty.

  • Far hardier than many roses, wonderfully vigorous, and very reliable, ‘American Pillar’ can grow quite large and provides interesting landscape opportunities with its heavy canes, densely clothed with luxuriant, glossy green foliage. Sadly, it has no fragrance. This beautiful climbing rose was bred by Dr. Van Fleet in 1902.
  • Blooms once in spring or summer
  • Grows up to 10-20 feet tall (300-600 cm) and spreads 10 feet wide (300 cm). An excellent choice as a free-blooming climber for walls, arbors, fences, or other garden structures. The effect of a row of American Pillar roses, covered with large trusses of pink flowers, is one long to remember!
  • Best grown in full sun in rich, fertile with adequate moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates shady locations but should get at least 6 hours a day of sun.
  • Provide good air circulation to avoid mildew.
