Alphabetical Plant Listing

Heliopsis helianthoides (False Sunflowers)

False Sunflower, Sunflower Heliopsis, Oxeye Sunflower (Heliopsis Helianthoides)

Sun-loving, easy to grow, hardy, heat and drought tolerant, False Sunflowers (Heliopsis helianthoides) have plenty of qualities and appeal! Valuable additions to the landscape with their profusion of bright golden daisies (2-3 inches wide, 5-7 cm) on display for 6 to 8 weeks all summer until early fall, they also feature a lovely foliage that is pleasant to the eye. Use them to brighten up a sunny area of the garden or in a vase where they will last a couple of weeks!

  • Growing in upright clumps of stiff, erect branched stems, up to 3-6 feet tall (90-180 cm), clad with coarse, serrated, medium green leaves, they prefer full sun and enjoy average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. They are not fussy about soils and tolerate a wide range including poor ones. However, best results are obtained in reasonably fertile, consistently moist and well-drained soils. Light shade is also tolerated, although the plants might tend to flop and hence will require some support.
  • Excellent choice for the perennial borders where their dazzling flowers are welcomed in any color scheme. Perfectly suited to the cutting garden, naturalized plantings and containers.
  • Attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, it is deer resistant!
  • Deadhead spent flowers to promote new blooms. Cut back after flowering
