Agave attenuata 'Boutin Blue' (Fox Tail Agave)
Agave 'Boutin Blue', Agave 'Blue Boy', Agave attenuata 'Nova', Fox Tail Agave 'Boutin Blue', Agave attenuata 'Huntington Blue'
A splendid blue selection of Fox Tail Agave, Agave attenuata 'Boutin Blue' is an evergreen succulent perennial which produces elegant rosettes of wide, flexible, blue-green leaves, without any teeth along their margins. Emerging from a tight center, the soft, pliable, voluptuous leaves arch gracefully back. Each individual rosette may reach 5 ft. across (120 cm) and crowns a stout, smooth gray stems that can rise up to 5 ft. tall. Mature plants send up a spectacular, erect flowering stalk, up to 10 ft. tall (300 cm), which bears pale greenish yellow flowers that will give way to seed pods and a profusion of new plantlets. This desirable hybrid Agave is much bluer and has wider leaves than its parent, Agave attenuata.
- Grows up to 4-5 ft. tall and wide (120-150 cm).
- Easily grown in slightly acidic, sandy or gravelly, moist or dry, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates part shade, particularly in hot desert gardens where shade will prevent scorching of the foliage and keep the blue-green coloration of each leaf as dark as possible. Keep in a frost-free area in winter and put it out on the patio or balcony in summer. Irrigate little or regularly for more vigor. Drought tolerant.
- Great for beds and borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens or Mediterranean gardens. Ideal as an accent plant in sunny borders or in decorative containers.
- Deer resistant
- Virtually disease free. Watch for slugs and snails.
