Callirhoe bushii (Bush's Poppy Mallow)
Bush's Poppy Mallow, Callirhoe involucrata var. bushii, Callirhoe papaver var. bushii
Callirhoe bushii (Bush's Poppy Mallow) is a showy herbaceous perennial boasting masses of brilliant magenta cup-shaped flowers from early to late summer. Poppy-like, the eye-catching upward-facing blossoms, up to 2.5 in. wide (6 cm), consist of five overlapping petals with a white spot at their base surrounding a prominent central column of stamens. They are borne singly atop partially erect and rambling stems. The leaves are palmately divided (hand-shaped) into 5 to 7 lobes. Callirhoe bushii provides a vibrant display in both formal garden areas and naturalized areas.
- Grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm). Will self-sow in ideal garden conditions.
- Thrives in full sun or light shade in dry to medium, well-drained soils. Good drainage is essential to survival. Drought tolerant once established.
- Excellent addition as a bedding plant alone or mixed in a grassy area. Great for border fronts, rock gardens, prairies or naturalized areas, it makes a lovely ground cover. Let it trail over a stone wall too!
- No serious insect or disease issues. Crown rot may occur in poorly drained soils.
- Anchored by a substantial taproot makes transplanting of established plants difficult.
- Native to the Southern United States, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
