Glaucium flavum (Yellow Horned Poppy)
Yellow Horned Poppy, Horned Poppy, Bruisewort, Sea Poppy, Seaside Poppy, Glaucium luteum
Glaucium flavum (Yellow Horned Poppy) is a short-lived perennial forming a handsome rosette of deeply incised, scalloped, blue-gray leaves. In late spring and summer, bright yellow poppy flowers, 3 in. across (8 cm), are borne on branched stems above the foliage. Adding months of color, they are attractive to bees. They give way to long, narrow, seed pods, 6 in. (15 cm), that ripen in late summer to spread their seed around the garden. Yellow Horned Poppy is easy to grow and undemanding. It reseeds freely in good growing conditions, springing up and shining in the garden year after year.
- Grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 18 in. wide (45 cm).
- Prefers full sun in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Provide occasional to little water. Resents root disturbance. Drought tolerant once established.
- Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
- Perfect for beds and borders, coastal gardens, cottage gardens or wildlife gardens.
- Sow seed in situ in spring or autumn.
- Roots are toxic if ingested.
- Native to Europe Africa Asia.
