Bred for heat and humidity tolerance, Heuchera ‘Fire Chief’ is a particularly interesting variety of reblooming Coral Bells for 2 reasons: its amazing scarlet foliage which generally holds its color over the seasons and its continuous blooms, both features providing an incredibly long season of interest. Creating gorgeous, colorful mounds, the lobed, rounded, mid-sized leaves emerge glowing wine red in spring, then mature to deeper crimson shades in summer and fall before slightly browning out in winter.

  • In spring, summer and fall, open panicles of small, bell-shaped, bicolored pink and white flowers bloom repeatedly on dark red stems rising up to 18 in. (45 cm) above the semi-evergreen foliage. This Heuchera is also prized by gardeners for its drought tolerance and good resistance to powdery mildew.
  • This clump-forming perennial forms basal mounds, up to 8 in. tall (20 cm) with a spread of 15 in. (37 cm). This sturdy performer is not only easy to grow, but also requires little maintenance and is virtually pest and disease free!
  • Performs best in part shade, in richhumusymedium moisturewell-drained soils. If grown in full sun, make sure the soil remains consistently moist or the foliage might decline. Thrives in dry shade, once established. It is attractive to butterflies and often ignored by deer.
  • A spectacular addition to bedsborders, rock gardenswoodland gardens and is ideal as groundcoveredger along paths or in containers. Fabulous when planted in groups!
  • Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years.
  • Remove stems of faded flowers to promote additional bloom. Apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to help prevent root heaving.
