Lonicera japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle)

Japanese Honeysuckle

Lonicera japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle) is a vigorous twining vine bearing highly fragrant, pure white, tubular flowers that gradually change to pale yellow from late spring through late summer. They are followed by glossy black berries (in hot summers) that attract birds. This Japanese honeysuckle has a lush foliage of oval, dark green leaves throughout the growing season. It is deciduous in northern climates but often evergreen in warmer areas. Native to eastern Asia, this rampant and invasive vine should be replaced by similar but better behaved honeysuckle vines such as Lonicera periclymenum (Woodbine) or Lonicera heckrottii (Goldflame Honeysuckle). If used in the garden, great care should be taken with managing it and with disposing of unwanted material.

  • Grows up to 15-30 ft. tall (450-900 cm) and 3-6 ft. wide (90-180 cm)
  • A part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, dry to moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Drought tolerant.
  • A good choice for mass plantings on banks and slopes for controlling erosion.
  • High maintenance, this plant is generally pest and disease free. Watch for aphids, thrips and powdery mildew.
  • Cut back hard in late winter to control growth and to remove dead undergrowth.
  • Propagate by layering, hardwood cuttings or semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • This species is listed on Schedule 9 of The Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order (1985), as amended, as an invasive non-native species.
