Adding an exotic touch to the garden, Passiflora ‘Lavender Lady’ is a vigorous evergreen climber with dusky lavender flowers, 4 in. wide (10 cm), adorned with a ring of rich violet-purple pointed filaments surrounding the green fleshy reproductive structures. The abundant blooms are followed by egg-size deep orange fruits from late summer through fall. Since ‘Lavender Lady’ is largely sterile, it tends to produce mostly hollow fruits – so don’t count too much on eating them. The foliage consists of deep blue-green three lobed leaves which create a perfect backdrop for the flowers. ‘Lavender Lady’ is a pretty hybrid Passiflora resulting from a cross between Passiflora amethystina and the very hardy Passiflora caerulea. It is often confused with Passiflora ‘Amethyst’.
This passion flower belongs to the Passifloraceae family, famed not just for its edible fruit but also for its intricate passion flower. Among these botanical floral beauties are Passiflora alata, P. incarnata, P. racemosa, P. lutea, P. edulis, and the ravishing P. caerulea.
