One of the tallest Yarrows, award-winner Achillea filipendulina ‘Cloth of Gold’ (Fern-Leaf Yarrow) is a showy herbaceous perennial boasting a profusion of bright yellow flattened clusters from early to late summer. Sitting atop erect leafy stems, the blossoms float above the elegant, semi-evergreen, deep green, fern-like leaves. The foliage emits a spicy aroma when crushed. Easy care, drought, heat, humidity, and deer tolerant, this towering beauty is perfect for sunny borders, cottage gardens, or containers.

  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and spreads 18-24 in. (45-60 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Dry soils are tolerated. Avoid heavy clays and moist, rich, fertile soils.
  • A vital ingredient of herbaceous borders, cottage gardens, meadows, or prairies. This Yarrow is also valued for the excellent quality of its cut flowers, whether in bouquets or dried floral arrangements.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids, and powdery mildew. Deer resistant.
  • Deadhead spent flower heads to encourage additional bloom.
  • Cut back untidy foliage in spring.
  • Propagate by division in spring.
  • Achillea filipendulina species is native to central and southwestern Asia (Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Caucasus).

Achillea, commonly known as Yarrow, belongs to the Asteraceae family, which also includes asters, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers. The genus was named after Achilles, hero of the Trojan Wars in Greek mythology, who used the plant to stop the bleeding and heal the wounds of his soldiers. Brightening the garden throughout the summer, this perennial plant is versatile, easy to propagate, and available in a wide range of sizes and colors.
