Among the earliest flowering yarrows, Achillea Desert Eve Red (Yarrow) is a compact herbaceous perennial boasting a profusion of large, long-lasting clusters of brick-red flowers. Blooming for weeks from late spring to late summer, this eye-catching beauty easily enlivens any sunny corner of the garden. The pleasantly aromatic, semi-evergreen, deeply-divided foliage nicely compliments the cheerful flowers. Attractive to bees and butterflies, easy care, drought and heat tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, this brightly colored yarrow is perfect for sunny borders, outstanding in containers and excellent for cutting.

  • Grows up to 16-20 in. tall (40-50 cm) and 18-20 in. wide (45-50 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Light shade is tolerated, but best coloring and flowering is obtained in full sun. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Vital ingredient of beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or patio containers. Achillea is also valued for the excellent quality of its cut flowers, whether in bouquets or dried floral arrangements.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids, powdery mildew. Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Trim back hard after the first flush of bloom, to maintain a compact habit.
  • Propagate by division in spring.
  • Achillea millefolium species is native to Europe, western Asia, North America.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.

Achillea, commonly known as Yarrow, belongs to the Asteraceae family, which also includes asters, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers. The genus was named after Achilles, hero of the Trojan Wars in Greek mythology, who used the plant to stop the bleeding and heal the wounds of his soldiers. Achillea millefolium (Common Yarrow) is native to most of Europe and temperate parts of western Asia. Brightening the garden throughout the summer, this perennial plant is versatile, easy to propagate and available in a wide range of sizes and colors.
