Bergenia cordifolia (Heartleaf Bergenia)

Heartleaf Bergenia, Heart-Leaf Bergenia

Native to Siberia, Bergenia cordifolia (Heartleaf Bergenia) is a clump-forming evergreen perennial noted for its incredible hardiness and vigor. Borne on thick red stems in early spring, erect clusters of deep-pink flowers rise above a rosette of leathery, shiny, heart-shaped leaves. Deep green in summer, the large leaves, 12 in. long (30 cm), turn purplish-bronze in winter, providing year-round interest. The attractive foliage is often used in floral arrangements. Low maintenance, Bergenia cordifolia is primarily grown as a ground cover and looks stunning in mass plantings.

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall and wide (30-45 cm).
  • Easily grown in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils in sun or part shade. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils, but dislikes hot, dry conditions. Heavy shade tolerant too!
  • Undemanding and virtually disease-free, this Bergenia is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, banks and slopes, cottage gardens, rock gardens, or city gardens.
  • Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Remove faded flower spikes
  • Propagate by division or root rhizomes sections in fall or spring
