Bidens ferulifolia (Apache Beggarticks)
Apache Beggarticks, Fern-Leaved Beggarticks, Coreopsis ferulifolia, Bidens procera
Long-blooming and carefree, Bidens ferulifolia (Apache Beggarticks) is a vigorous low-growing evergreen perennial, often grown as an annual, boasting a profusion of delicately fragrant, bright yellow daisies, up to 2 in. across (5 cm). Blooming from early summer right through to fall, nearly year-round in frost-free areas, the five-petaled blossoms are carried on wiry stems above the bushy foliage of finely dissected dark green leaves. Rich in nectar, the flowers are a good pollen and nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Tolerant of heat, wind, and drought, this fast-growing Southwest U.S. native is an excellent performer. Forming a compact mat of long-lasting bright golden flowers, it is suitable for growing in beds or containers for the decoration of balconies, terraces, and patios. Ideal for hanging baskets as it has vigorous, cascading stems.
- Grows up to 18 in. tall (45 cm) and 12-36 in. wide (30-90 cm). May reseed.
- Performs best in full sun in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Appreciates regular watering in the warmest periods. Tolerant to heat, wind, and short periods of drought.
- A welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, containers, or hanging baskets.
- Easy to grow, relatively pest and disease-free, Bidens ferulifolia is ignored by deer.
- Plants may be cut back if the foliage sprawls or becomes leggy.
- No deadheading is required.
- Propagate by seed or stem cuttings.
- Native to Arizona, Texas, and Mexico.
