Geranium 'Mavis Simpson' (Cranesbill)

Geranium 'Mavis Simpson', Crane's Bill 'Mavis Simpson', Geranium × riversleaianum 'Mavis Simpson', Hardy Geraniums

Noted for the length of its flowering season, award-winning Geranium 'Mavis Simpson' is a spreading, semi-evergreen perennial with masses of perfectly rounded, soft, shell pink flowers, adorned with finely drawn, darker veins and a white center. The blossoms are held on long flowering stems, well above the foliage of finely cut, downy, silver-tinted leaves, and produced in great quantities from late spring to late fall. Well-behaved, with one of the longest flowering periods of the hardy geraniums, it is an ideal element of the perennial border where the flowers will gently thread their way through the stems of neighboring plants. Excellent ground cover too.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows with a large, mounding habit, up to 18 in. tall (45 cm) and 36-48 in. wide (90-120 cm). This hardy geranium will spread slowly over the years and keep going without attention.
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Full sun in mild summer gardens, morning sun, and afternoon shade in hot summers. Though it prefers moist, well-drained soil, it will also tolerate periods of drought once established. Deer and rabbits resistant.
  • Great for beds and borders, underplanting shrubs and roses, excellent ground cover, and lovely addition to cottage gardens and rock gardens.
  • Requires very little maintenance and is generally not subject to serious pest or disease issues. May be occasionally affected by vine weevil, capsid bug, sawflies, and powdery mildew.
  • Remove flowered stems and old leaves to encourage the production of fresh leaves and flowers
  • Propagate by division in spring or propagate by basal cuttings in early to mid-spring and root with bottom heat
