Lonicera × americana (American Woodbine)

American Woodbine, Lonicera americana, American Honeysuckle

Rich with a powerful clove scent, Lonicera × americana (American Woodbine) is a superb deciduous climber with whorls of tubular flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), that open white before turning creamy-yellow with a flush of red, pink, or purple. Produced in succession from late spring to the first frost, the fragrant flowers eventually give way to red berries. Vigorous, this honeysuckle features a foliage of semi-evergreen, dark green, and oval leaves. Perfect for a pergola or arch or as a backdrop on a wall or fence.

  • Grows up to 20-25 ft. tall (6-7.5 m) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm)
  • A part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils, including clay soil, and dry soil, but prefers moist, loamy soils.
  • Excellent choice for covering walls, fences, trellises, or pergolas. Excellent for screening.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is deer resistant and generally pest and disease free.
  • Minimal pruning is required. Prune after flowering.
  • Propagate by layering, hardwood cuttings or semi-hardwood cuttings
