Lycoris incarnata (Peppermint Spider Lily)

Peppermint Spider Lily, Peppermint Surprise Lily

One of the most cold-hardy varieties of spider lilies, Lycoris incarnata (Peppermint Spider Lily) is a bulbous perennial boasting a dense display of large, white flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with a pink stripe running lengthwise down the center of each petal. Held in umbels of 6 to 8 flowers, they open in succession from striped buds - an umbel in full display is a pretty sight. Emerging in spring, the foliage of narrow, strap-shaped, green leaves remains fresh-looking until it dies out in mid-summer, just when the pretty candy-striped blossoms emerge atop a leafless flower stalk. Unlike many Lycoris species, Peppermint Spider Lily is reported to require a hot, dry resting period to flower well. It is a lovely flowering bulb, adding a welcome spot of color at a time when many plants are preparing to go dormant. It is perfect for the vase too.

  • Grows up to 20 in. tall (50 cm) and 4-6 in. wide (10-15 cm). Will naturalize and multiply where happy.
  • Best flowering occurs in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil that dries out in summer. Water regularly while plants are growing and again when flower stalks emerge. Protect in colder areas with a deep, dry mulch over winter.
  • This plant deserves a prime spot in beds and borders and is well suited for city gardens, cottage gardens, rock gardens or containers. Plant in groups of 3-5 minimum for best visual impact. Excellent cut flowers.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant, drought tolerant and attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds!
  • Plant about 1 in. (2.5 cm) deeper than the top of the bulb.
  • Lift your Lycoris bulbs in fall if you live in zones 3-4 for winter storage. Replant the following spring after frosts are over.
  • Native to the moist, wooded slopes of China.
