A popular dwarf selection, Aster novi-belgii 'Professor Anton Kippenberg' (New York Aster) features masses of semi-double, lilac-blue flowers with narrow ray petals. Borne on slender, branched stems bearing lance-shaped, green leaves, they bloom for weeks from late summer to mid-fall and enliven any sunny corner of the garden. Native to North America, this dwarf Aster is easy to grow, long-lived, brings cheerful fall color, in borders or containers, and is a great source of nectar for butterflies.
- Typically grows with an upright, bushy habit, up to 12-16 in. tall (30-40 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm). Deer and rabbit resistant!
- Thrives in full sun or light shade, in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Moist, rich soils are preferred. Provide good air circulation to avoid foliage diseases such as powdery mildew. Drought, salt, and wet soil tolerant.
- A vital ingredient of late summer and fall borders, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, or butterfly gardens. New York Asters are also valued for the excellent quality of their cut flowers.
- Asters are a must if you are trying to attract birds or butterflies!
- Propagate by division in spring; regular division helps to keep plants healthy and vigorous but is only necessary every few years
- Sometimes susceptible to powdery mildew.
- No pruning is required, except cutting stems close to the ground in late fall.
