Potentilla thurberi 'Monarch's Velvet' (Scarlet Cinquefoil)

Scarlet Cinquefoil 'Monarch's Velvet', Potentilla 'Monarch's Velvet'

Potentilla thurberi 'Monarch's Velvet' (Scarlet Cinquefoil) is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial boasting showy, saucer-shaped, deep raspberry-red flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with a dark center from early to late summer. Produced in abundance, the blossoms contrast nicely against the foliage mound of strawberry-like, bright green leaves. Noted for its extremely long blooming season, this Cinquefoil is one of the easiest plants to care for. It is perfect for adding color to a sunny border. Excellent for cutting.

  • Grows up to 12-30 in. tall (30-75 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade, in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers poor to moderately fertile, light, well-drained, sandy loams. Tolerates drought once established.
  • Virtually pest and disease free, it is also deer resistant.
  • Cinquefoil is very adaptable and an excellent choice for beds and borders, cottage gardens, or rock gardens.
  • Cut back stems in fall.
  • Propagate by division in autumn or spring, or propagate by seed (cultivars may not come true)
