Slender Vervain, Hardy Garden Verbena, Large-Veined Verbena, Veined Verbena, Sandpaper Verbena, Rigid Verbena

Blooming for weeks, Verbena rigida (Slender Vervain) is a tuberous perennial forming a bushy mound of oblong, rigid, dark green leaves, 2-4 in. long (5-10 cm), and clusters of fragrant, intense purple flowers on branched stems. Blooming from summer well into late fall, the blossoms are rich in nectar and attract bumblebees, honeybees, butterflies and other pollinators. Compact and reliable, Slender Vervain spreads by creeping underground rhizomes and comes back from one year to the next. Low-maintenance, it is an excellent species for the front of sunny borders, as a groundcover or for containers. This tender perennial is hardy in zones 7 but can be grown as an annual in cooler areas.

  • Performs best in full sun in average, moist and well-drained soils. Drought and heat tolerant. A winter mulch is recommended in Zone 7.
  • Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Great for garden edging, beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or containers.
