Acer shirasawanum 'Kawaii' (Full Moon Maple)
Full Moon Maple 'Kawaii', Shirasawa Maple 'Kawaii'
Acer shirasawanum 'Kawaii' (Full Moon Maple) is a dwarf, deciduous shrub or tree of cute appearance (Kawaii means "cute" in Japanese) noted for its deep reddish-orange, dissected foliage. Emerging pink-red in spring, the small, palmate, deeply divided leaves turn burgundy with green highlights as the season progress, before changing to brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall. Forming a low, spreading mound of cascading foliage, this slow-growing maple cultivar is perfect for small gardens or containers.
- Grows up to 2 ft. tall (60 cm) and 2-4 ft. wide (60-120 cm) at maturity.
- A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Best leaf color in partial shade. Although full sun is tolerated, leaves may scorch in full sun in hot climates.
- Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, and city gardens.
- Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
- May be affected by horse chestnut scale, aphids, verticillium wilt.
- Propagate by grafting
