A late-season bloomer, Allium ‘Lavender Bubbles’ (Ornamental Allium) is a bulbous perennial boasting profuse, bubble-shaped flowers packed with dark dusty purple florets. Blooming from late summer to early fall, they are borne atop sturdy, upright stems just above the attractive foliage clump of twisting and curling, glaucous blue-green leaves. The foliage has a slight onion scent when bruised. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract bees and butterflies. They make excellent cut flowers. This selection has not been known to reseed and is not invasive. Easy to grow, carefree, deer and rabbit resistant, Allium ‘Lavender Bubbles’ is a charming addition to the rock or herb garden

  • Grows up to 12-14 in. tall (30-35 cm) and 20-22 in. wide (50-55 cm).
  • Thrives in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Add grit to clay soils to improve drainage. This Allium is drought tolerant.
  • Lovely in beds and borders, cottage gardens, and containers. To achieve an impressive visual effect, plant in clusters.
  • Known for attracting bees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators, but deer and rabbits ignore it.
  • Generally pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for onion white rot and downy mildew.
  • Cut back after flowering or merely remove dead flowerheads.
  • Propagate by removing offsets in autumn.

Hundreds of Allium species exist, but only a few have made a name for themselves as garden plants. The ornamental onions distinguish themselves by their remarkable diversity in color, inflorescence, and flowering height. Many species bloom in early summer – just after the spring-flowering period and just before the exuberant full bloom of summer. Certain small species are just perfect for a rock garden, and several lend themselves to naturalizing. All species can be used in the border.
