Allium oreophilum (Pink Lily Leek)

Pink Lily Leek, Mountain Lover, Alpine Rosy Bells, Allium ostrowskianum, Allium platystemon, Ornamental Onion, Spring Bulbs, Spring Flowers

Allium oreophilum (Pink Lily Leek) is a compact, hardy bulb with delicate, loose umbels of rosy reddish-pink, star-shaped flowers adorned with darker midveins. The blossoms are mounted on wiry gray-mauve stems and rise above narrow, semi-erect, gray-green leaves. Blooming in late spring to early summer, this compact, hardy bulb is excellent for well-drained rock gardens.

  • Growing up to 8-12 in. high (20-30 cm), this beauty naturalizes easily and will slowly spread to form lovely colonies!
  • Easily grown in fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun.
  • Attracts butterflies, but deer ignore it!
  • Stunning in beds, borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, coastal gardens or in containers. For best visual impact, plant in groups (at least 20 bulbs).
  • To be planted in fall.
  • Propagate by seed, sowing in containers in a cold frame when just ripe or in the spring. Alternatively, remove offsets in fall.
  • Native to Turkestan, Caucasus, C Asia

Many hundreds of Allium species exist, but only a modest few have made a name for themselves as garden plants. The ornamental onions distinguish themselves by their great diversity in color, inflorescence and flowering height. Many species bloom in early summer - just after the spring-flowering period and just before the exuberant full bloom of summer. All species can be used in the border. Certain small species are just perfect for a rock garden, and several lend themselves to naturalizing.
