Nepeta sibirica ‘Souvenir d’André Chaudron’ (Catmint)

Catmint 'Souvenir d'André Chaudron', Nepeta sibirica 'Blue Beauty'

AGM Award
Nepeta Nepeta sibirica 'Souvenir d'André Chaudron', Catmint 'Souvenir d'André Chaudron', blue flowers, violet flowers, lavender flowers

One of the most cold-hardy of the catmints, award-winning Nepeta sibirica ‘Souvenir d’André Chaudron’ (Catmint) is a compact, suckering perennial boasting loose spikes of lavender-blue flowers held in many whorls. Blooming over a long season extending from early summer until fall, they rise above the foliage of aromatic, lance-shaped, deep green leaves. Spreading and clump-forming, this Nepeta selection is valued for its exceptional hardiness and vigor.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Typically grows up to 30 inches tall (75 cm) and 18-20 in. wide (45-50 cm). The plant will reseed.
  • Performs best in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer areas. Avoid fertile and moist soils, where it may produce rather lanky growth.
  • A remarkably low-maintenance plant, this excellent performer is highly versatile and can be used in many situations: beds and borders, gravel gardens, city gardens, cottage gardens, and coastal gardens. Nepeta is perfect for underplanting roses as the colors complement each other and the foliage hides the bare feet of the rose bushes.
  • Attracts butterflies but is ignored by deer and rabbits.
  • Extremely easy growing plant with few pests or problems. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails or powdery mildew in dry summers.
  • Deadhead spent flowers and cut hard back at the end of the flowering season or in early spring.
  • Propagate by division in spring or autumn; take softwood stem-tip cuttings in early summer or semi-ripe cuttings in early autumn.
