Rhododendron catawbiense (Catawba Rosebay)
Catawba Rosebay, Purple Rhododendron, Red Laurel, Catawba Rhododendron, Mountain Rosebay
Providing a stunning floral show, Rhododendron catawbiense (Catawba Rosebay) is a large, oval-rounded, broadleaf evergreen shrub boasting large rounded clusters of lilac-purple flowers. Blooming from mid-spring to early summer, each cluster (or truss), 5-6 in. across (12-15 cm), can hold up to 20 attractive funnel-shaped flowers with delicate yellow to brown throat markings. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Borne at the tips of stout, ascending branches, the blossoms contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of elliptic, glossy, dark green leaves. Excellent for shade gardens, this eastern U.S. native is regarded as one of the most durable and adaptable Rhododendrons in cultivation. Long-lived (75–100 years), it is a fine choice as a specimen, in mixed shrub borders, and for massing or naturalizing.
- Grows up to 6-10 ft. tall (180-300 cm) and 8-12 ft. wide (240-360 cm).
- A part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in evenly moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils. Good soil drainage is critical. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best in hot summers. Protect from high winds. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
- Keep an eye out for canker, crown rot, root rot, leaf spot, rust, powdery mildew, aphids, borers, lacebugs, leafhoppers, mealybugs, mites, nematodes, scale, thrips and whiteflies.
- Deadheading is not necessary but can be snipped off carefully after blooming.
- Pruning should be done immediately after flowering.
- All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
- Native to the southeastern United States.
