Dianthus gratianopolitanus (Cheddar Pink)

Cheddar Pink, Cliff Pink, Clove Pink, Mountain Pink, Sweet Pink, Dianthus Caesius

Ground-hugging, Dianthus gratianopolitanus (Cheddar Pink) is a very charming evergreen perennial which produces abundant, richly scented, rose to pink small flowers (less than an inch across) with fringed petals atop wiry stems. Rising from tufted mounds of grassy, gray-green foliage, they bloom enthusiastically in late spring with some sporadic rebloom in summer, specifically if the plants are deadheaded regularly. Easy to grow, and perfect for adding a splash of color in the garden, Cheddar Pink attracts bees and butterflies, but is ignored by deer.

  • Growing up to 6 in. tall (15 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm), this perennial Garden Pink is quite hardy and sturdy.
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Extremely versatile, Dianthus gratianopolitanus is ideal for rock gardens, border fronts, rocky slopes or over stone walls. Effective as a ground cover in small areas or as edging plant too.
  • Prefers sunny locations and enjoys neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils.
  • Deadhead to prolong flowering.
  • Native to western and central Europe
