Noted for its unique bloom shape, Coreopsis tinctoria ‘Mardi Gras’ (Tickseed) is an upright, fast-growing annual with abundant star-shaped flowers adorned with elegant, pointed petals. Blooming from early summer to fall, the flowers are brilliant yellow with a wine-red center and a deeper red center disc. They are borne on smooth, stiff, long stalks from multi-branching stems. The airy and feathery foliage of lance-shaped leaves appears mostly on the lower half of the plant. Tolerant of summer heat and humidity, this North American native wildflower brings prairie charm to the sunny border and is perfect for wildflower gardens. Plant in drifts for great impact and make sure you have enough for the vase!

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall and wide (30-45 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates poor, rocky soils and is somewhat drought tolerant.
  • Easy to grow, this Coreopsis is a favorite of butterflies but is ignored by deer.
  • Welcomed addition to beds and borders, wildflower meadows, cottage gardens or patio containers.
  • Keep an eye out for slugs and snails.
  • Deadheading will prolong the flower display
  • Propagate by seeds sown where plants are to flower, from early spring to early summer.
  • Coreopsis tinctoria species is native to the United States.
