A very tall variety, Helianthus annuus 'Arikara' (Common Sunflower) is a fast-growing annual with broad, oval to heart-shaped, roughly hairy leaves. In summer, it produces large, single, and multi-headed flowers, up to 12-16 in. across (30-40 cm), with brilliant orange or yellow petals surrounding a usually dark chocolate central disk. Borne on sturdy stalks, the flower heads are attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds. Named after the Native American tribe that grew it as a food, medicinal, and ceremonial plant, it is easy to grow and sensational at the back of a sunny border. Gardeners also harvest the nutritious edible seeds!
- Typically grows up to 8-10 ft. tall (240-300 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm). May need support
- Prefers full sun and enjoys moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. Site in a sheltered location, as the wind may catch the heavy heads.
