Tomato pruning sounds simple: find the suckers and remove them. But that advice is too crude to be useful.
A tomato sucker is not wasted growth. Left alone, it develops into another stem that can produce leaves, flowers, and tomatoes. Removing suckers can make a plant easier to train, improve access and airflow, and sometimes produce earlier or larger individual fruit – but it can also reduce total yield and expose tomatoes to sunscald if too much foliage is removed.
The right pruning strategy depends on the tomato’s growth habit, the support system, and your harvest goal. An indeterminate tomato trained vertically on a single stake may need regular sucker removal. The same variety growing inside a large cage can keep several productive stems. A determinate tomato usually needs very little pruning because many of the side shoots you might remove are part of its concentrated crop.
The most important tomato-pruning rule: Do not prune by habit. Prune according to growth habit, support capacity, and what you want from the harvest.

A tomato sucker is a new shoot that grows from the leaf axil – the angle where a leaf joins the main stem.
When very young, it looks like a tiny leafy shoot tucked between the stem and leaf. If left alone, it develops into another full stem capable of producing its own leaves, flower clusters, and fruit.
This is why the familiar advice to “remove suckers so the plant can put all its energy into fruit” is misleading. Suckers do compete for space and resources, but they are also productive stems.
Removing suckers changes the architecture of the plant. It generally means:
Fewer stems: The plant becomes narrower and easier to train.
A more open canopy: Leaves and fruit are easier to inspect and harvest.
Fewer potential flower clusters: Every removed sucker is also a stem that could have produced flowers and fruit.

Before pruning a tomato, identify its growth habit. This decision matters more than almost any individual pruning technique.

Indeterminate tomatoes continue producing new stems, leaves, flower clusters, and fruit until weather, frost, disease, or the gardener stops them.
A vigorous indeterminate can become a dense mass of overlapping stems. This gives the gardener much more flexibility. Depending on space and support, you can:
Train it to a single leader on a narrow stake or string.
Keep two or three leaders on a wider support.
Allow multiple productive stems inside a large cage.
Prune selectively rather than following a rigid sucker-removal rule.
Dwarf describes plant stature, not necessarily growth habit. A dwarf tomato may be determinate, semi-determinate, or indeterminate. Do not assume that a compact plant should be pruned like a determinate tomato simply because it is short.

Do not begin by aggressively removing growth from a newly transplanted tomato. Let the plant establish and begin active growth first.
A practical sequence is:
After transplanting: Let the plant establish rather than immediately stripping healthy growth.
As the plant grows: Remove leaves resting on the soil if necessary.
Once flower clusters appear: The plant’s structure becomes easier to read, so decide which stems you want to retain.
During vigorous growth: Inspect trained indeterminate tomatoes about once a week and remove unwanted suckers while they are still small.
Later in the season: Reassess rather than automatically continuing the same pruning routine.
Small suckers are easy to pinch away and leave smaller wounds than thick mature stems. Regular light pruning is generally easier on the plant than allowing several unwanted stems to become large and removing them all at once.
Whenever possible, prune after foliage has dried. Working among wet plants can increase the chance of moving some pathogens on hands, tools, or wet plant surfaces.

There is no universally correct number of stems for an indeterminate tomato. The appropriate number depends mainly on spacing and support.
Single-stem training is useful when tomatoes are grown vertically on narrow stakes or strings and garden space is limited.
To train a single stem:
Identify the main leader.
Tie or clip it loosely to its support as it grows.
Remove competing suckers regularly while they are small.
Keep enough healthy leaves to feed the plant and shade developing fruit.
The result is a narrow plant that is relatively easy to inspect and harvest. The tradeoff is that fewer stems mean fewer potential flower clusters. Pruned, staked plants may produce earlier or larger individual fruit, but that does not necessarily mean a larger total harvest.
For many home gardens, two- or three-stem training offers a useful compromise.
Start by:
Keeping the main stem.
Selecting one or two strong, well-positioned suckers as additional leaders.
Training each retained leader onto the available support.
Removing later shoots that would overcrowd the plant or exceed the support’s capacity.
A vigorous sucker near the first flower cluster is often selected as a second leader because it develops early and can be trained alongside the main stem.
A large, sturdy cage changes the pruning calculation. Because the cage supports multiple stems, heavy sucker removal is usually unnecessary.
Concentrate instead on:
Leaves and stems touching the soil.
Dead or badly diseased foliage.
Stems growing awkwardly outside the cage.
Enough selective thinning to keep the center accessible.
Stake, trellis, and cage are not interchangeable pruning systems. The narrower the support, the fewer stems it can comfortably carry. A large cage can support a much fuller tomato than a single stake.
How you remove a sucker depends mainly on its size.
Very small sucker: Pinch it between your fingers and bend it gently sideways until it snaps cleanly.

Missouri pruning is a middle ground: You reduce an oversized sucker without suddenly removing all of the foliage it has already produced.

Good candidates for removal include leaves that:
Rest directly on the soil.
Are badly yellowed and no longer functioning well.
Are broken or severely damaged.
Show significant disease symptoms and should be removed as part of a disease-management strategy.
Creating some clearance around the base makes watering, mulching, inspection, and harvesting easier and can help foliage dry more readily.
Think selective clearance, not bare stems. Healthy lower leaves still contribute energy to the plant. Remove leaves for a reason rather than stripping the bottom of every tomato automatically.

Overpruning can:
Reduce photosynthesis: Fewer leaves means less leaf area producing carbohydrates for growth and fruit development.

Is the problem limited to a few old lower leaves?
Are lesions actively spreading?
Will removing the affected foliage leave enough healthy canopy?
Could the symptoms be caused by drought, herbicide injury, nutrient stress, or another noninfectious problem instead?

Diagnose before you defoliate. Removing a diseased leaf can be useful. Removing half the canopy because the leaves “look bad” can create a second problem.
Topping means removing the active growing tip of a stem.
During most of the growing season, routinely topping an indeterminate tomato defeats one of its main advantages: its ability to continue growing, flowering, and setting new fruit.
Late-season topping can make sense when:
The growing season has a predictable end.
The first frost is only several weeks away.
The plant is still producing new flowers that have little realistic chance of yielding mature fruit.
The existing plant already carries a substantial crop worth ripening.
In that situation, removing vigorous growing tips can stop further extension growth and reduce the production of late flowers. You can also remove very late flowers and tiny fruit that clearly will not have enough time to mature.
In long frost-free climates, calendar-based topping is less useful. The decision should reflect climate, plant vigor, available support, and whether continued production is still desirable.
Topping is a seasonal strategy, not routine maintenance. During active production, keep the growing tip unless you have a specific reason to stop that stem.
Container tomatoes do not automatically need more pruning. Growth habit still comes first.
