Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' (Laceleaf Japanese Maple)
Japanese Maple 'Orangeola', Laceleaf Japanese Maple 'Orangeola', Cutleaf Japanese Maple 'Orangeola'
Regarded as one of the most spectacular cascading Laceleaf Japanese Maples, award-winning Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' is also one of the most admired for its remarkable leaf color. This deciduous shrub or small tree features large, bright orange-red leaves in spring, adding sparkles to the garden. The deeply divided foliage matures to rich red-green with attractive orange undertones in summer. This coloration is enhanced by a second flush of new orange leaves in midsummer, which lay over the older foliage to create two-tone summer color. In the fall, the leaves again turn fiery red and orange, keeping their colorful display later than most, before shedding to the ground. Although vigorous, this Japanese Maple is not as wide spreading as other forms of Laceleaf Maples, making it an excellent selection for containers.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualities
- Grows up to 4-8 ft. tall (120-240 cm) and 3-7 ft. wide (90-210 cm).
- A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Best leaf color in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Leaf scorch can be caused by a lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure.
- Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, city gardens, and containers.
- Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
- May be affected by horse chestnut scale, aphids, and verticillium wilt.
- Propagate by grafting or softwood cuttings.
- Acer palmatum is native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia.
