Agastache rugosa 'Little Adder' (Anise Hyssop)

Hyssop 'Little Adder', Anise Hyssop 'Little Adder', Hummingbird Mint 'Little Adder'

Compact and very floriferous, Agastache rugosa 'Little Adder' (Anise Hyssop) is a short, well-branched perennial with a remarkably long floral display, extending from late spring to fall. Masses of tubular, two-lipped lavender-blue flowers, held in showy spikes, are borne atop a bushy foliage clump of licorice-scented leaves. While 'Little Adder' is half the height of the popular ‘Black Adder’ or ‘Blue Fortune' Agastache cultivars, it is reported to bloom three times more. This dwarf Agastache is perfect to add color and a lovely spiky texture to beds, borders, rock gardens, or containers.

  • Grows up to 15-18 in. tall (37-45 cm) and 18-22 in. wide (45-55 cm).
  • Easily grown in full sun, in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Dislikes damp conditions and needs excellent drainage. Although a drought-tolerant plant, it might need watering in extreme dry weather spells.
  • Provides a bold visual impact in beds and borders, cottage gardens, city gardens, butterfly gardens, or patio containers over a very long season. Ideal for naturalistic planting schemes. Great as cut flowers too!
  • Ideal to add color to the late-season garden when many other plants are fading.
  • Creates a stunning effect when mixed with other perennials or planted en masse.
  • Attracts streams of hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
  • Generally disease and pest-free (might occasionally be subject to powdery mildew) and resistant to deer and rabbits.
  • While a sturdy plant, this Agastache may require staking if planted in rich, moist soils or in exposed locations.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to promote additional bloom.
  • Propagate by seed or by division in spring.
  • Agastache rugosa is native to China, Vietnam, Laos, Korea, and Japan.
