A sport of the popular Allium ‘Millenium’, Allium ‘Serendipidity’ (Ornamental Allium) is a bulbous perennial boasting profuse, globe-shaped, rosy-purple flowers. Blooming from mid to late summer, they are borne atop sturdy, upright stems just above the attractive foliage clump of blue-green leaves. The foliage has a slight onion scent when bruised. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract bees and butterflies. They make excellent cut flowers. Easy to grow, carefree, deer and rabbit-resistant, Allium ‘Serendipity’ is a charming addition to the rock or herb garden.
Hundreds of Allium species exist, but only a few have made a name for themselves as garden plants. The ornamental onions distinguish themselves by their remarkable diversity in color, inflorescence, and flowering height. Many species bloom in early summer – just after the spring-flowering period and just before the exuberant full bloom of summer. Certain small species are perfect for a rock garden, and several lend themselves to naturalizing. All species can be used in the border.
