Reliable and long-lived, Epimedium × warleyense ‘Orangekönigin’ or ‘Orange Queen’ (Barrenwort) is an evergreen perennial making a carpet of heart-shaped, medium green leaves with bold red edges in spring. Quite ornamental, the foliage gradually turns mid-green for the summer, before turning bronze with red tones in fall. In mid to late spring, clouds of small, pale coppery orange flowers dance on wiry stems just above the unfurling foliage. Their rounded sepals stand wide open around the small yellow petals that surround bright yellow stamens. Although this Epimedium is slow-growing, it makes a good groundcover and is perfect for dry shade under trees.

  • Grows up to 8-10 in. tall (20-30 cm) and 12-16 in. wide (30-40 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in average, acidic, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Humus-rich, fertile, moist soils in part shade are preferred. Drought tolerant once established. Protect from cold, dry winds.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Rabbit and deer tolerant.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, shade gardens. Excellent as a groundcover.
  • Propagate by division in fall or after flowering.
  • Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring for the best display of new foliage and flowers.
