Tough and hardy, Geranium phaeum ‘Samobor’ (Dusky Cranesbill) is an upright perennial of great beauty with slightly reflexed, maroon flowers adorned with a white heart in late spring to early summer. The blossoms float elegantly above the foliage of deeply lobed, soft green leaves, adorned with a striking chocolate-brown band. A useful geranium that thrives in shady areas of the garden. Plant this stylish plant where its chocolate-splashed leaves can be appreciated.

  • Clump-forming, this rhizomatous perennial reaches 24-30 in. in height and spread (60-75 cm). Quite a tall species so may need support to prevent it from flopping on some sites
  • Performs best in part shade, in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils. Tolerates full sun but prefers partial shade. It is attractive to butterflies but deer and rabbit resistant.
  • A perfect border plant, it is a spectacular addition to shade gardens, cottage gardens, woodland gardens, and wild gardens and is ideal in beds and borders or underplanting shrubs and roses.
  • Remove flowered stems and old leaves to encourage the production of fresh leaves and flowers
  • Propagate by division in spring or propagate by basal cuttings in early to mid-spring and root with bottom heat
