Helleborus x hybridus ‘White Lady Spotted’ (Lenten Rose) is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial with clusters of 2-3 cup-shaped, white flowers spotted with dark red. Blooming heavily for weeks from late winter to early spring, these nodding beauties, 2-3 in. across (5-7 cm), rise on sturdy, thick stems above the serrated, glossy dark green foliage. Showy and long-lasting, ideal to brighten the shade garden!

The Lady Series consists of ten seed-strain hybrid hellebores which were developed by Gisela Schmiemann of Cologne, Germany, and introduced into commerce by Jelitto Perennial Seeds.

  • Grows in a bushy, upright clump, up to 12-18 in. tall and wide (30-45 cm). This perennial will self-seed in satisfactory growing conditions.
  • Performs best in part shade in fertile, humus-rich, moistneutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. Tolerates sun. Lenten Roses are very tolerant and will grow well in most soils as long as the ground is not extremely dry or stagnantly waterlogged. Select a sheltered site to protect them from cold winter winds. Deer resistant!
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a welcomed addition to shady borders, containers, woodland gardens, or naturalized areas. Plant in groups for the best visual impact. Lovely groundcover when massed
  • Virtually disease and pest free but keep an eye out for slugs and aphids.
  • Remove faded or damaged foliage as the flowers appear.
  • Mulch annually in the fall.
  • Propagate by division of large clumps, after flowering in early spring, or in early autumn. Propagate by seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe; plants produced from seed may be variable.
  • Ingestion may cause severe discomfort, skin irritant. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
