Papaver cambricum (Welsh Poppy)

Welsh Poppy, Meconopsis cambrica

Meconopsis cambrica , Welsh Poppy, Papaver cambricum, Yellow flowers, Perennial Poppy, Yellow Poppy

Papaver cambricum (Welsh Poppy) is a tap-rooted perennial boasting bowl-shaped, soft yellow to orange flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), from late spring into fall. Adding months of color, the flowers are borne on branched stems and contrast well with the foliage of bright green, pinnately lobed, hairy leaves. Resembling California or Iceland poppies, Welsh Poppy is easy to grow and undemanding. It reseeds freely in good growing conditions, springing up and shining in the garden year after year.

  • Grows in clumps up to 12-18 in. tall and wide (30-45 cm).
  • Prefers part shade and enjoys neutral to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained soils. Grows best in areas with cool, damp summers.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, cottage gardens or prairies and meadows.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to Western Europe, including the British Isles.
