Mock Orange – Pittosporum tobira: An In-depth Look

Pittosporum tobira, commonly known as Mock Orange, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to Asia. It is widely cultivated for its fragrant flowers, dense foliage, and adaptability to various climates. This species is frequently used as a hedge, screen, or foundation planting due to its attractive appearance and hardiness.

Native Range

Mock Orange is native to China, Japan, and Korea. It thrives in warm temperate to subtropical regions and has been widely introduced to coastal areas worldwide, including the Mediterranean, the southern United States, and Australia.

Plant Type and Habit

This broadleaf evergreen shrub exhibits a dense, rounded to spreading habit. It can be pruned into a compact hedge or allowed to develop into a small tree with multiple trunks.

Size

Mock Orange typically grows between 8-13 feet (2.5-4 m) in height and 4-8 feet (1.2-2.5 m) in width. Dwarf cultivars, such as ‘Nanum‘ or ‘Tom Thumb‘ remain more compact, making them ideal for smaller gardens. This evergreen shrub or tree typically exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate, with the potential to reach substantial sizes over time when provided with optimal growing conditions.

Lifespan

With proper care, Pittosporum tobira can live for 25-50 years in favorable growing conditions.

Flowers and Fruits

Flowers: Clusters of creamy-white, five-petaled flowers bloom in late spring to early summer. These highly fragrant blossoms emit a scent reminiscent of orange blossoms, giving rise to the common name ‘Japanese Mock Orange’. They last for several weeks before gradually fading to creamy yellow.

Fruits: Following flowering, the shrub produces small, three-valved capsules that mature to brown. When fully ripened, they split open to reveal bright red seeds.

Foliage

The foliage consists of leathery, glossy green leaves that are obovate to spatulate in shape. Arranged alternately along the stems, the leaves may have slightly curled margins. They create a dense, evergreen canopy year-round.

Bark

The bark is smooth and grayish-brown when young, becoming rougher with age.

Hardiness

Mock Orange is hardy in USDA zones 8-10, making it well-suited to warm coastal and subtropical climates. Where not winter hardy, plants should be overwintered in greenhouses or sunrooms.

Award

Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Wildlife Value

The fragrant flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. While the seeds are not a primary food source, some birds may occasionally interact with the plant. The dense foliage provides shelter and nesting sites for small birds and insects.

Deer and Rabbits

Mock Orange is not resistant to deer browsing.

Toxicity

Pittosporum tobira is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets in typical landscaping and garden settings. However, like many plants, it contains natural compounds such as saponins, which can cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort if ingested in large amounts.

Invasiveness

While Pittosporum tobira is not considered invasive in most regions, it has naturalized in some areas where it has been widely planted.
