Rosa arkansana (Arkansas Rose)

Prairie Rose, Arkansas Rose

Cold hardy and drought tolerant, Rosa arkansana (Arkansas Rose) is an upright, deciduous, suckering shrub with attractive, serrated, dark-green foliage that turns fiery orange-red in the fall. In summer, a profusion of fragrant, single, white to deep pink flowers appear in small clusters on densely prickly stems. They are followed by abundant, bright red rose hips that persist into the fall and winter. Birds and wildlife will feast on them. Resistant to drought and fire, Arkansas Rose spreads by rhizomes to form a low open prickly thicket. Perfect for water-wise prairie or meadow plantings.

  • Grows up to 2-4 ft. tall and wide (60-120 cm).
  • Best grown in full sun or part shade, in well-drained soils. Tolerant of poor soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Perfect for cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows.
  • Attractive to pollinating insects, butterflies, and birds
  • Resents transplanting. Make sure you pick the right spot for it.
  • Propagate by seed or cuttings.
  • Native to North America.
