Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' (Tickseed)

Tickseed 'Sunray', Sunray Tickseed

Very floriferous, Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' (Tickseed) is a compact perennial forming a mound of brilliant, deep golden-yellow, double flowers. Blooming from late spring to late summer, the charming blossoms are borne on upright stems atop the finely divided foliage of dark green leaves. Removing spent flowers regularly will encourage blooming to continue into the fall. Tolerant of summer heat and humidity, this Coreopsis is perfect for the sunny border or container and makes excellent cut flowers. Plant in drifts for great impact and make sure you have enough for the vase!

  • Winner of the Fleuroselect Gold Medal.
  • Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade (specifically in hot summer areas) and enjoys dry to medium moisture, and well-drained soils. Thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is drought tolerant.
  • Easy to grow, relatively pest and disease free, this Coreopsis is a favorite of bees and butterflies but is ignored by deer.
  • Very versatile, it is a welcomed addition to borders, naturalized areas, and cottage gardens and does great in containers. Effective as an accent plant and spectacular in mass plantings.
  • Deadheading of spent flowers will promote new blooms, although this can be tedious. Midsummer shearing (after the first flush of flowers) should help tidy up the plant and promote a fall rebloom.
